floor plan

here's a revised floor plan

click to enlarge though this is not the full res 300 dpi as that file is too large

internet problems

ive been having lotsa problem with the internet, thus the long hiatus.

finally, though, i am able to post stuff up.

here's some sketches showing an exploration of ideas.

more to come.

some rudimentary sketches. these were a little rough as i did them on the plane.

was exploring what i could do to break up the glazing.

perhaps add a facade element that would take the role of unshading (instead of the frit design) and add a connection o the landscape.

was also exploring different heights. and breaking up the length of the gallery space into segments. literal 'boxes' like 'snapshots' of the contour landscape.

these 'snapshots' would:

-determine internal program, such as what to display in each 'snapshot'

-determine experience. different heights, materials, lighting levels.

this is me trying to articulate the 'snapshot' idea further.

thinking it could be a timeline of sorts.

using the contour line to generate a experiential timeline of marysville as a natural and cultural history museum.

i then came up with 6 'phases' for my snapshots.

-beginnings: history of marysville, how it came about etc.
gallery exhibits: old photographs, relics etc.
experience: sloping high ceiling, lower light levels

-paradise: marysville before the fire, well known as a botanical paradise and getaway of sorts.
gallery exhibits: maximising view to outside, photos of marysville when beautiful
experience: highest ceiling, brightest, most view to outside

- ashes: remnants of marysville when the fire hit. to remember the dark times.
gallery exhibits: photos, remnants of the fire.
experience: lowest ceiling, darkest, least view to outside

- hope: what was left and how the world seemed to turn its eyes towards marysville.
help and donations poured in (for awhile).
gallery exhibits: donated exhibits and remnants of marysville from all over the country and the globe. pieces of the identity of marysville and how it had impacted people from all over the place.
experience: higher ceiling than 'ashes', amount of light and and view exposure progressively increasing. main, 'hope' is main and central part of building.

- regrowth: snapshot of marysville rebuilding after the fire.
gallery exhibits: pictures, stories and even exhibits of the rebuilding going on all around marysville. a progressive tracking on the different rebuilding efforts and overall regrowth also of the natural environment.
experience: higher ceiling than 'hope', amount of light and view defined in uniform segments like 'being put together'.

- tomorrow: meant to be a space depicting the new rebuilt marysville.
gallery exhibits: exhibits depicting or describing how marysville may be like when rebuilt and re-established
experience: tapering roof sloping upwards, higher than 'regrowth'. additional skylight at end to depict 'the sky's the limit' (also for taller large exhibits). amount of view and light quite high although facade may be of different material from the rest, signifying 'new' marysville.

facade design.

toying around again with the different ways to articulate the facade with the experiential qualities depicted above.

facade screen is to be fitted externally on the east elevation, incorporating also the structural colonnade.

in the end i decided on vertical timber lourvres/battens on which a fire retardant creeper may be introduced on.

differing concentrations and distribution of the battens to highlight change of experience (light and view) to the inside.

-timber and vegetation: more connection to the natural environment.

-sunshading

-ember prevention (fire retardant plant catches them)

elevation sketches

trying to distribute the battens to depict the experience inside
also, thought of using bulkheads internally to define the height changes and spatial experience

rough layout plan showing timeline of marysville using the contour line to generate form and spatial experience

on the actual contour line and level change, included a 'nature strip' which would introduce natural flora exhibits (located outside) on panels incorporated on the level change. (balustrade on higher level side, info panel on lower level side)

entrance/egress now located more along contour line and incorporated into building form.

the smaller exhibits/panels would be on the higher level of the contour line, and the large exhibits on the lower level of the contour line with nature strip dividing them.

seperate stores for small/large exhibits embedded within earth.
still incorporating structural gridline informing landscaping, but to a lesser extent.
